IOWA YMCAs Today

Serve people of all income levels, ages and abilities

Iowa YMCAs serve more than 295,425 Iowans, 49.5% of whom are under the age of 17. The combined YMCA's make a huge contribution to the Iowa way of life by serving people of all ages, faiths, backgrounds and incomes.

YMCAs of Iowa's mission

The YMCAs of Iowa's mission is to develop in the spirit, mind and body of all people. Through programs based on Christian principals, the Y helps strengthen families and build better communities. The YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility are incorporated into all YMCA programs.

Provide Support

Through offering membership and program scholarships, program support and community collaborations, the approximate total value of donative support provided by YMCAs in Iowa communities is over $13 million annually. Iowa YMCAs provide over $4 million in scholarships every year to help subsidize programs and memberships for youth, disabled, seniors, and low-income families. We reach out to every person in the community. No one is turned away due to an inability to pay.

Encourage volunteerism

Iowa YMCAs are volunteer-founded, volunteer-based and volunteer-led. Each year nearly 12,000 community-minded individuals volunteer their time and talents to support Iowa YMCAs. YMCAs are governed by unpaid, voluntary Boards of  Directors to best meet unique community and state needs. The assets of a YMCA are dedicated to our mission and charitable purpose. No one can own a YMCA, and no one can profit from one.

Partner with neighborhood organizations

In order to respond to specific needs of the community, YMCAs collaborate with such organizations as schools (public and private), churches, city parks and recreation departments, police and fire departments, Head Start programs, Special Olympics, D.A.R.E., county probation offices, 4-H, FCA, Department of Social Services, Red Cross, hospitals, colleges, and universities, and United Way agencies.

For over 150 years the YMCA has remained a relevant, effective organization by developing programs that meet community needs. As the needs of the community change, so do the programs.

Programs are the tools used to improve lives. Through them, YMCAs create experiences that nurture the healthy development of children, encourage positive behavior in teens and strengthen families. The result is that YMCAs build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities.
