Civic Engagement

The Montgomery County Family YMCA was one of 40 YMCAs among 2,493 YMCAs throughout the United States of America invited to the recent YMCA Civic Engagement Symposium from a submitted application. The Montgomery County Family YMCA sent a team of four representatives to participate in the Symposium in Chicago, IL. Team members consisted of Helen Murphy, Nancy Murphy, Pat Gilliland and Nick Zimmer.

The Montgomery County Family YMCA was selected as a nationwide leader in the area of civic engagement, which the YMCA has taken initiative designed steps to further the development of the YMCA civic engagement programs, projects and practices that promote good citizenship for young people ages 15 –22.

The YMCA of USA defines civic engagement as a “person’s capacity to work with others to affect common interests, to see oneself as a stakeholder in public life, to value the mechanisms for democracy and to believe people have a responsibility to contribute to their communities.” Contact the YMCA for more information.
